Testing season is almost done! With one week of testing left there are a few things to keep in mind. Get a healthy amount of rest each night 8-10 hours of sleep. Eat a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner so as to keep your energy levels up. Pay attention in class to instructions as confusion is a time waster when regarding the testing time. If we keep all of these items in mind the week will go by as smoothly as possible. These are the links to the test sessions that you will need in order to take the Smarter Balance testing this week:
Monday:
Practice Tests
Tuesday-Thursday:
Reading, Language, and Math Tests (click on secure browser icon in the dashboards)
Good luck class! One more week and we are on to bigger and better things!

Happy New Year 5th graders! I am so grateful to have you all back in class for the second half of the school year. With every new year comes newer and higher expectations for my class of growing thinkers. The rigor and growth of responsibility will increase dramatically as we inch closer to our final days together. I am looking onward for students to take the leadership reins in my class when it comes to their education. Many students have taken on this challenge and even a few have entered my prestigious "Hall of Fame." In 2014, I look to induct more students as they take on my growing challenges for the new year. Speak to each other about the expectations of the classroom. Work together and know that you have tremendous support from your teachers and classmates. For the first couple of days back in school I will remind students of their challenges and resources that they can use to succeed. I am again looking forward to meeting and talking with parents if there are ever any concerns or questions.

December 2- December 6, 2013
Welcome back from a restful Thanksgiving break everyone! As we are coming back into the last leg of 2013 there are a few things to remember...
Students, it is your continued responsibility to check grades. Today in class, every student was given their PowerSchool logins and shown how to check for redo assignments and missing work. I have high expectations for my fifth graders to take on the responsibility. Parents please continue to regularly check on these grades too. If you need your login information, then please contact me to obtain this information.
This week we will be traveling to the Moss Mansion. Requirements for attendance include: a two dollar fee, good grades with no missing assignments, and clothing that is appropriate for the walk to the location. We may need to reschedule if the weather turns below zero temperatures. The same expectations will apply however.
On December 18 from 12:00-2:00, we have the lanes at Sunset Bowl reserved for our arrival. I have called a "cut-off" for accepting late and missing work for December 11 for this field trip. Students are WELL aware of their expectations for attending this final trip of 2013. I would hate to leave any student behind, but with the accommodations that have been made it is all in the students' decisions now. More information in the next week will come home about this trip. Keep an eye open!

I had an excellent time meeting all of you parents while answering questions and giving information about your student. Meeting once a year about your student is not really my style however. If at any point during the year you would like to meet again for any reason concerning your student, then my schedule is open for placement of that meeting. After this point, students will start on the track to becoming more independent with their own grades. I will keep an in-class book of all the student logins for PowerSchool. Students will be required once a week to look at their own grades and check for opportunities to complete redo assignments. I will not allow any student to fail the fifth grade.

Parent-Teacher Conferences this week! We have a short 15 minutes to discuss the best strategies for your student, concerns within the classroom, and to cover expectations. It is not a lot of time and I have always offered more time outside of the normal conferences to meet in the event of parents wanting more time. I am on a strict schedule to meet everyone and my goal is to discuss with 100% of my parents. Come prepared to talk about your student! Write down questions and concerns beforehand so as not to waste any time. If you cannot make your scheduled time, I will sign you in for a new time either this week or in the next weeks. If it is possible, please include your student on this meeting. We will be talking about them, so I believe it is important that they are present.

You will notice a green slip in your student's return folders on Monday. This will notify you of the time you have been scheduled in for conferences with me next week! I will also have the times listed below for your convenience. For conferences, bring any questions or concerns you have about your student's grades or assignments. The school year is young! Let's take the opportunities to make sure your student is successful for the rest of the year!
Chili night will be on Tuesday, October 29. Come in from 5:00-7:00 to have chili and participate in our student council coloring contest.
On Wednesday we will walk, fair weather or not, to the Alberta Bair Theater for a performance. Permission slips went out last Friday. If students intend on attending, they need to be able to check off every item on this list:

Missing work is continuing to become an issue for students in my classroom. Check your student's assignment notebook along with the work that is due the next day. Set up a time after or before school to meet with your 5th grader to make sure everything is in order. I fill out our classroom assignment notebook everyday with the students, so please make sure that you are checking the material that is covered in class.
Red Ribbon Week all this week:
Monday - Wear sweats
Tuesday- Wear shorts (if weather permits)
Wednesday- Wear camouflage
Thursday- Wear crazy socks
Friday- Wear your favorite sports team gear AND wear a hat all day to donate a dollar to "Kaitlyn's Voice," a fundraiser to raise awareness for speech and language disabilities.

Last week marked the introduction of Redo Assignments. These are assignments that any student can do to replace the grade the earned on an assignment. The redoes can be done at any time and are required if the student scored under a 70% on an assignment. Parents, check your students grades! If they have a cumulative grade under 70%, then you need to ask if they have attempted doing a redo assignment. There is no reason why any fifth grader should fail any subject.
The organization tip for this week is review your student's notes each night. Make sure they are writing clear notes. Check to make sure they are using space correctly and that they are writing cleanly on the lines. I check notes too, but if a student does not have the basics down it is hard for me to assess whether or not they were attentive in class.
Another busy week for the books. Call me to set up appointments for questions!

Midterms go home this week! Check your students' grades and match with the notes that they are taking home. Check for organization and clean note taking strategies to pass along to your student. Notebook grades are a regular part of your student's participation grade. If you see areas for desired improvement, then schedule a meeting with your student and me. We can all check to make sure the best practices are being used.
Now that we have hit the midway point of the first quarter expect to see more work coming home. The organization tip for this week is to check and sign your student's assignment notebook. Ask questions about assignments and inquire about work in class.
Keep up the great work everyone!

Excellent week planned for students! We have an early out on Thursday. Make sure you plan your student's lunch time accordingly. Green slips have been handed out in case you want your student to get a sack lunch that day. Check out what we are doing for Math and Science; definitely some cool stuff happening! Your student should have brought home a set of papers for your attention. The papers include everything from the open house notes to my classroom schedule. Make sure you find these papers! Please sign up for the Remind 101 application! As I write this, I see only 9 students that are being represented! Instructions on how to sign up for the valuable application were part of that set of papers. The organization tip for the week is to clean out your backpack every night. Throw loose papers inside of your pack away, and make sure items are placed neatly inside of folders and notebooks. Everyone is doing a great job so far! Keep it up!
